Getting it going

In an attempt to get back into things, I submitted a proposal to the Play Things conference slated for November in Manchester. It's a paper I've been mulling over for a while now. I got my acceptance already so I'm hoping that this will kickstart me into writing it.

Play Things - November 4th 2009 - School of Arts, Histories & Cultures (University of Manchester)

Games and play are an intrinsic element of culture and society, yet both remain under theorised in academic literature. Play Things is a one day academic conference which aims to bring together a range of the most current and exciting research. The definition of play is broadly positioned to encourage an interdisciplinary approach, though we intend papers to have a specific focus on digital cultures.

Indications of areas of particular interest are:
. The shaping of identity through play (in either real or virtual selves).
. Play in relation to the body, sexuality and gender.
. Play in relation to practices of education.
. How play relates to performance (dramatic, everyday or otherwise).
. The role of technology in play (incorporating the Internet, playing by yourself and playing with others).
. The notion of the game in literature.
. The role of play in everyday life.
. Historical representations through play.
. Theoretical aspects of play.
. Methodological issues in research into play.

Please submit 200 word abstracts for consideration by Friday 14th August to:

Should be good and not to expensive to attend, given that it is only a day long.
